PROJECT CHALLENGES
Every pool and spa retaining wall is designed with a specific configuration and an eye to detail. Homeowners and contractors always compile their best efforts and ideals along with the architect to envision a finished pool layout. However, there are instances where new home owners elect to alter or change the original plans due to visual qualities once the house/pool materializes.
This particular new home owner elected to add a retaining wall to the new home after all the concrete foundation pilings had been driven. The house already had the perimeter block walls up with the concrete contractor preparing to form and pour the concrete tie-beams. The modified retaining wall would require four (4) helical piling for support. The BCB construction team turned to Coastal Foundation Solutions to assist them in their endeavors to install a deep foundation system.
HELICAL PILE INSTALLATIONTHE SOLUTION
A combination of four (4) new construction piers were chosen to stabilize the retaining wall foundation. Each helical pile was installed next to the existing new pool foundation. The helical piling consisted of a “Chance” 8”/10”/12” lead section (2.875-inch OD by 0.203-inch wall) hollow round shaft with a configuration on the lead sections to sustain a design working tension load of 24 kips. The helical piles are rotated into the soil with Caterpillar mini-excavator equipped with a hydraulic torque motor. The installation torque is continuously observed throughout the installation.
PRODUCT
- The helical pile lengths ranged from 14’ to 44’ in depth. Upon completion of the helical pile installation, couplings and terminations were imbedded into a concrete footer. The Caterpillar 305 CR excavator with a specialized hydraulic drive system powered by a 10k Pro-Dig drive head was utilized to install the foundation piling.
- Four (4) “Chance” 2 7/8” round shaft helical piles with a 10”-12” 14” triple-helix lead section was installed with a 304 CR Caterpillar Excavator. The excavator progressed the extensions to lengths on the order of 21-45 feet to achieve final installation torques. The ultimate capacities of at least twice the design working tension load of 20 kips
- Nineteen (19) “CHANCE” (RS2875.203) round helical extensions were installed to corresponding capacities to secure compression load of 24 kips.
- Torque capacities are monitored throughout the installation procedure with a Digital Torque Indicator. A Hot Dipped Galvanized termination plate is then affixed on top of the pile and encased into the new concrete foundation. The pile can be loaded immediately.
